We've had a rather mild winter--until this week. For several days now the temperature has dropped into the 20s at night. The winds accompanying the temperatures have made it feel even colder. My aviary is no more (birds blown out, probably now frozen somewhere.) Your assumptions (and mine) about California gardens have just been challenged. Check out this picture of this strangely melted jade plant--in full bloom because of the recent warm weather! My ficus tree is limp and brown, my tree ferns, stiff and shriveled.
Now I know this is minor compared to blizzards and 8 foot snow! Fort Collins has been pummeled!

Anyone else have some freaky weather to share? Send me your tales and pictures if you have them.
I'm sure this doesn't qualify as "freaky", but last night it snowed for the first time since I've been in North Carolina (two winters). We probably didn't get more than an inch, but it's a funny thing to watch the Duke undergrads on campus explain to each other the different types of weather "no... see now this is called 'sleet'". I also passed by at least 3 or 4 snowmen on my way into the lab - most of them filled with pineneedles and other debris because they had to scrape the ground to collect enough snow to create them.
ReplyDeleteAnd we saw little buds on trees in Cincy as temperatures in deep winter hit 61 last week for several days of weird warmth. Usually, we'll dip way below freezing, down in the teens . . . but there is no more "usual" weather. I guess we'd better just go with the flow. Hope all are safe and happy.
